CELEBRATED HIV & AIDS ACTIVIST WINSTONE ZULU DIES

The Zambia Disability HIV Human Rights Programme says it has learnt with deep sorrow, the demise of HIV & AIDs activist Winstone Zulu. Zambia Disability HIV Human Rights Programme Director Elijah Ngwale, says the disability fraternity is shocked at the death of Mr. Zulu. Mr. Zulu, who was one of the first Zambians to publicly announce that he was HIV positive in the early 1990s, died in the early hours of Wednesday12.10.2011.

Mr. Ngwale disclosed in an interview that his organisation will remember the late Zulu as a gallant HIV/AIDS activist. He says the late Mr. Zulu was a source of inspiration to many people living with HIV/AIDS in the Country. He says Mr Zulu’s determination to lead a positive life compelled other people living with HIV and AIDS to emulate him.

Mr. Ngwale has since implored organisations engaged in the fight against HIV/AIDS to forge ahead with the programmes the late Mr. Zulu initiated. And People Living with HIV/AIDS in Zambia -NZP+- in Mwinilunga district are saddened with the death of Mr. Zulu. Mwinilunga NZP+ District Co-ordinator Beauty Ntanga has noted that her organization drew a lot of inspiration from the late Mr. Zulu.Mr Zulu, who is arguably the first person to have come in public to reveal his positive HIV status, died in the early hours of today at the UTH.

Winstone Zulu was born in 1964 in Lusaka, Zambia, the sixth of thirteen children. After being diagnosed with HIV in 1990, he became the first individual in Zambia to publicly acknowledge his HIV status. In 1997, he contracted TB and, with access to effective medicines and treatment, was cured of the disease within that same year.
